I noticed a plain gcore command in test-case gdb.threads/gcore-thread.exp:
...
gdb_test "gcore $core0file" "Saved corefile .*" \
"save a zeroed-threads corefile"
...
Use gdb_gcore_cmd instead.
Tested on x86_64-linux.
